Alnwick Bus Station Transformation Reaches a New Milestone

Paving and landscaping work is under way at Alnwick bus station, part of the wider Borderlands regeneration of the town centre, with 25 new trees and rain gardens planned.

For anyone who catches a bus in Alnwick, the area around the station is about to feel rather different. Work to reshape the public space at the bus station and the neighbouring Morrisons service area is now under way, with paving and landscaping among the first jobs to get going this summer.

The scheme is part of the Borderlands Place Programme for Alnwick, a multi-million-pound effort to refresh the town centre that also takes in the Bailiffgate Museum's move to Northumberland Hall and improvements to the Cobbles. As reported by Northumberland County Council, the latest milestone follows the North East Combined Authority's approval of £1.8m of external funding, which the council formally accepted at its Cabinet meeting earlier this year.

What the work involves

The package covers the layout, safety, accessibility and general quality of the public area. Residents can expect the repair and replacement of hardstanding, a reconfiguration of bus parking, improved pedestrian routes, and new paving and seating.

There is a strong green thread running through the plans, too. The scheme introduces a total of 25 trees, along with a rain garden and ornamental planting, intended to lift the biodiversity and the general feel of this corner of the town centre.

Best for:

The bus station works are the first phase. A second phase, focused on refurbishing and modernising the bus station building itself, is being designed and is earmarked for early 2027.

Why it matters locally

The bus station is one of the busiest shared spaces in Alnwick, used every day by commuters, shoppers, students and visitors heading out to the coast and the surrounding villages. A safer, greener and more welcoming arrival point is a practical improvement for the many people who rely on public transport, and it sets the tone for the wider town-centre changes still to come.

Some disruption around the station is likely while the work is carried out, so it is worth allowing a little extra time for journeys over the coming months. The council has said improvements to safety and accessibility are the priority for this first summer phase.
