Alnwick reorganised to a two-tier system when its middle schools closed, so children now move from primary school straight to The Duchess's Community High School, which runs through to sixth form. Here is how education works across the town.
Alnwick's Two-Tier System
Although Northumberland runs a three-tier structure in some areas, Alnwick switched to the standard two-tier model — primary then secondary — after its middle schools closed. Children now stay at primary school to Year 6 before moving on at age 11.
Primary School
Nursery – Year 6
Primary schools take children from the early years through to Year 6. Alnwick's primaries include Swansfield Park Primary School and NCEA St Michael's CofE Primary School, both rated Good at their last inspection.
Secondary School
Year 7 – Year 13
The Duchess's Community High School takes students from Year 7 through to its sixth form. It recently converted to academy status, so it is awaiting its first Ofsted inspection under the new arrangement.
