Christmas Lights Switch-On in Alnwick 2026

Alnwick's volunteer-run Christmas lights are switched on each November. Local reports point to Friday 20 November 2026 on Bondgate Within, but the organisers have not confirmed it yet. Here is what we know, where to stand and how to get there.

Alnwick's Christmas lights are one of the town's proudest volunteer efforts. They are put up each year by the Alnwick Christmas Lights team, with Alnwick Town Council among their supporters, and the switch-on is the evening when much of the town turns out to watch them come on.

The date: Friday 20 November reported, not yet confirmed

As of 5 November 2026, neither the Christmas Lights team nor Alnwick Town Council had published a date, time or programme for this year.

Two local sources point the same way. The Northumberland Gazette's public notices round-up reported a festive lights switch-on on Friday 20 November, with a road-closure notice covering part of Bondgate Within from its junction with Market Street. The North East Family Adventures guide to 2026 switch-ons in the North East lists Alnwick on Friday 20 November at 7pm, moving to Bondgate Within this year because of works at the Northumberland Hall in the Market Place.

Treat that as the likely plan rather than a confirmed one. We will update this guide when the organisers announce the details, and it is worth checking the Town Council's news page before you set off.

What to expect

We will not guess at this year's line-up, but the pattern has been consistent. Recent switch-ons have been on a Friday evening in late November, with entertainment from about 6pm and the lights on at 7pm.

The Town Council's report on the 2025 switch-on describes a packed Market Place. The Duchess of Northumberland thanked the volunteers, local youngster Benjamin Elliott flicked the switch, and Father Christmas arrived afterwards with help from Alnwick Lions Club. There was also a new train display at Barter Books.

Who switches on the lights in 2026, and what entertainment there will be, has not been announced.

Where to stand

If the event does move to Bondgate Within as reported, the stretch between Market Street and the Bondgate Tower (Hotspur Tower) is where the crowd is likely to gather. It is narrower than the Market Place, so arrive early with small children and agree a meeting point in case you get separated. If the organisers keep it in the Market Place, the area in front of the Northumberland Hall has traditionally been the focus.

Getting there and parking

Alnwick's council car parks are free, though some need a £1 parking disc, sold in town shops and at the Tourist Information Centre. Dispensary Street, Roxburgh Place and Pottergate New Row are among the central car parks that need no disc. A road closure on Bondgate Within has been reported for the evening, so allow extra time if you are driving through the town centre. Our Alnwick parking guide and getting around Alnwick have more detail, including the train to Alnmouth and buses into town.

Accessibility

The organisers have not published accessibility information for 2026. Bondgate Within has fairly narrow pavements, and the cobbles in the Market Place can be uneven, so wheelchair users and families with buggies may find the edges of the crowd easier.

Making a weekend of it

The same Friday is the opening night of Winter Lights at The Alnwick Garden, which runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The Garden's own Christmas Fair follows on 21 and 22 November. The Alnwick Garden is a short walk from Bondgate Within.

Alnwick Playhouse on Bondgate Without, just through the Bondgate Tower, has a full festive programme, and Barter Books is the place to start your present list. See Christmas in Alnwick and Christmas markets in Alnwick for the full season, and what's on this weekend for everything else.

If you miss it

Hexham Town Council has listed its own switch-on for the same Friday, 20 November, and the Winter Lights trail at The Alnwick Garden runs until 3 January, so there is still plenty of festive light in town after the night itself.

What is not confirmed yet

As of 5 November 2026, the organisers had not confirmed:

  • The date, start time and location (Bondgate Within has been reported, not confirmed)
  • Who will switch on the lights, and the entertainment
  • Details of the road closure and parking arrangements
  • Any late-night shopping in the town centre
