Where to Park in Alnwick

Free disc parking in town, Castle car park, and Garden car park — every option with prices and tips for busy summer weekends.

Parking in Alnwick is surprisingly straightforward for a town that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Most town centre car parks are free (with a disc), the castle and garden have their own dedicated parking, and even on the busiest summer weekends there are options if you know where to look.

Town Centre -- Free Parking with a Disc

The majority of Alnwick's town centre car parks are managed by Northumberland County Council and are free to use, provided you display a valid parking disc. Discs cost £1 and are available from the Tourist Information Centre on The Shambles, as well as several shops and businesses around town. One disc lasts indefinitely -- you only need to buy it once.

Short-stay disc car parks typically allow 2 to 3 hours, which is enough for a wander around the town centre, a coffee, and some shopping. Long-stay car parks do not require a disc at all and are completely free with no time limit (though some have a 24-hour maximum stay with a 4-hour return restriction).

Best for: A parking disc costs just £1 and is reusable. Pick one up from the Tourist Information Centre on The Shambles before you park.

Greenwell Road Car Parks

Greenwell Road runs along the western edge of the town centre and has several car park sections (labelled A through E). Sections B, C, and E are free all day with no disc required -- these are your best bet for a longer visit to the town. Sections A and D allow up to 3 hours with a disc.

The car parks are a 3 to 4 minute walk from the Market Place and the main shopping streets. On a typical weekday, you will find a space without difficulty. Summer Saturdays are busier, but there are enough spaces across the sections to absorb most of the demand.

Dispensary Street Car Park

Dispensary Street is a long-stay car park that does not require a disc. It is free and sits close to the town centre, making it a reliable fallback when the Greenwell Road sections are full. It is popular with people working in the town as well as visitors, so spaces can be limited by mid-morning on busy days.

Roxburgh Place Car Park

Roxburgh Place is another free long-stay car park with no disc requirement. It allows parking for up to 24 hours, after which you must leave for at least 4 hours before returning. It is a short walk from Bondgate Within and the town centre shops.

Alnwick Castle Car Park

The car park for Alnwick Castle is at NE66 1YU, on the road between the castle and the Garden. It costs £3.75 and is contactless payment only -- there are no coin machines, so make sure you have a card or phone payment available.

This car park serves both the castle and the northern approach to The Alnwick Garden. It fills quickly on summer weekends and school holidays. If you are visiting the castle, arriving before 10:30 gives you the best chance of a space close to the entrance.

There are 6 disabled parking spaces at Castle Square, right next to the castle entrance, which are closer and more convenient for visitors with mobility needs.

Best for: The castle car park takes contactless payment only -- no cash. Six disabled spaces are available at Castle Square, closer to the entrance.

The Alnwick Garden Main Car Park

The Alnwick Garden's main car park is at NE66 1FJ, with approximately 300 spaces. The daily rate is £8, but it is free if you have a valid Garden ticket -- pay at the machine on arrival, then reclaim the fee by scanning your Garden admission ticket at the exit barrier.

If you are visiting both the castle and the Garden, it is worth knowing that the two are adjacent and you only need to park once. The castle car park (NE66 1YU) and the Garden car park (NE66 1FJ) serve different entrances, so choose based on which attraction you plan to visit first.

Tips for Busy Summer Weekends

Alnwick gets genuinely busy between June and August, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. The castle, Garden, and Lilidorei all draw large crowds, and the town centre fills with day-trippers. Here are some practical tips:

  • Arrive before 10:00. The castle and Garden car parks begin to fill from mid-morning. By 11:00 on a peak Saturday, the castle car park may be full.
  • Use Greenwell Road B, C, or E for the town centre. These free, no-disc car parks are slightly further from the main attractions but are often the last to fill.
  • Avoid circling the town centre. Alnwick's streets are narrow and congested in summer. If your first-choice car park is full, head straight to Dispensary Street or Roxburgh Place rather than doing laps.
  • Consider the bus from Alnmouth. If you are arriving by train at Alnmouth station (4 miles south), the connecting bus to Alnwick town centre runs regularly and avoids the parking problem entirely.
  • Check the Garden car park refund policy. If you have a Garden ticket, the £8 parking fee is refunded -- but you need to process it at the exit machine. Do not forget to keep your Garden ticket handy.

Best for: On the busiest summer days, arriving before 10:00 and heading straight to a specific car park -- rather than hoping for a town centre space -- will save you time and frustration.
