Alnwick on Screen: Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Beyond
From Harry Potter's first broomstick lesson to Downton Abbey's Brancaster Castle and a Transformers blockbuster -- a guide to Alnwick Castle's life on screen.
Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, a 900-year-old fortress still home to the Duke of Northumberland. It is also one of the most filmed locations in Britain. From boy wizards to period drama, Hollywood blockbusters to cult comedy, the castle's medieval walls have stood in for everything from Hogwarts to a Transformers battleground.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)
The connection that put Alnwick Castle on the global map. When Warner Bros. was scouting locations for the first Harry Potter film, director Chris Columbus chose Alnwick Castle to represent the exterior of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The Outer Bailey is where Harry Potter had his first flying lesson under Madam Hooch's instruction -- the scene where Neville Longbottom's broomstick carries him away and Harry gives chase on instinct. The Inner Bailey, courtyards, and the Lion Arch were all used to bring the castle to life as Hogwarts.
Filming took place across the castle grounds, and the production returned for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). The scenes of Ron Weasley and Harry arriving at Hogwarts in a flying Ford Anglia, crashing into the Whomping Willow, were also filmed here.
Best for: Alnwick Castle runs free broomstick training sessions on most visitor days. Pick up a timed ticket when you arrive -- they are popular and go quickly.
Downton Abbey (2014-2015)
Alnwick Castle played the role of Brancaster Castle, the Yorkshire shooting estate where the Crawley family and their friends gather for a grouse shooting weekend in Series 5 and the Christmas Special.
The cast and crew of Downton Abbey spent two weeks at Alnwick in July and August 2014, filming extensively in the State Rooms, the castle grounds, and at Hulne Priory within Hulne Park. The lavish Italianate interiors -- installed by the fourth Duke of Northumberland in the 1850s -- provided a suitably grand backdrop.
In July 2015, the production returned for a further week of filming in the State Rooms, on the ramparts, in the nearby Bow Alley, and at St Michael's Church Hall. These scenes became part of the final-ever episode, broadcast on Christmas Day 2015. Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, and the full ensemble cast were present for what proved to be the last on-location shoot of the series.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
In September 2016, Hollywood arrived in force when director Michael Bay chose Alnwick Castle as a filming location for Transformers: The Last Knight. Stars Mark Wahlberg and Sir Anthony Hopkins filmed scenes in the Library, the Inner Bailey, on the Lion Bridge, and at Bowburn, just outside the castle walls.
A tank and the iconic Transformer vehicles -- including Bumblebee and Hot Rod -- were brought on site. The castle doubled as an ancient stronghold connected to the film's Arthurian mythology.
Elizabeth (1998)
Shekhar Kapur's historical drama starred Cate Blanchett as the young Elizabeth I in one of her breakthrough roles. Alnwick Castle was used to represent a royal palace in several scenes, and the grounds served as the backdrop for sequences depicting the burning of Protestant martyrs during the reign of Mary I.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
Kevin Costner's swashbuckling adventure used Alnwick Castle as Nottingham Castle, exploiting its imposing medieval architecture as a backdrop for the film's action sequences. The castle's genuine 12th-century origins lent authenticity that a purpose-built set could not match.
Blackadder (1983)
The castle appeared in the first series of the BBC's beloved sitcom Blackadder, which was set in the late medieval period. Rowan Atkinson's scheming Edmund made use of Alnwick's authentic medieval corridors and courtyards, before the show moved to studio sets for subsequent series.
Other Productions
Alnwick Castle has also appeared in:
- Star Trek: Prodigy (voice cast, with the castle digitally recreated)
- Various documentary series on English and medieval history
- Commercial and fashion shoots drawn to the castle's photogenic profile
The castle's appeal to filmmakers lies in its authenticity. Unlike many English castles that survive only as ruins, Alnwick is intact, inhabited, and maintained to a standard that requires minimal set dressing. The medieval exterior, the Italianate State Rooms, and the sweeping parkland offer three distinct visual worlds within a single location.
Best for: The castle's own website lists its screen credits at alnwickcastle.com, with behind-the-scenes details of each production.
