Best Playgrounds in Alnwick
Lilidorei (world's largest play structure), Swansfield Park, and local play areas in Alnwick.
Alnwick has something no other town in the country can claim -- the world's largest play structure. But beyond Lilidorei at The Alnwick Garden, there are also free local playgrounds that serve families day to day. Here is a guide to the best options.
Lilidorei at The Alnwick Garden
Lilidorei opened in May 2023 and is billed as the world's largest play structure. At its heart stands Elfwin Drin, an 85-foot-tall climbing tower -- taller than the Angel of the North -- with interconnected suspension bridges, gangways, and enormous tube slides. The structure is spread across nine themed clan houses, each with its own character and play features.
It is genuinely extraordinary in scale. Children aged 0-12 can spend hours here without repeating the same route. There are separate areas for toddlers and older children, and the whole design encourages imaginative, physical play. Sessions include activities, games, and interactive storytelling.
Lilidorei requires a separate ticket from the main Alnwick Garden admission and can sell out on busy days. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially during school holidays. The Duchess of Northumberland has also committed to Free Fridays, ensuring every schoolchild in Northumberland has the chance to visit for free during their primary school years.
Best for: The world's largest play structure. Book tickets in advance -- it sells out on busy days. Free Fridays available for Northumberland schoolchildren.
The Alnwick Garden Play Features
Even without a Lilidorei ticket, The Alnwick Garden itself has play value for children. The Grand Cascade is a water feature with 120 computer-controlled jets, and on warm days children gravitate towards it and get thoroughly drenched. The Poison Garden offers guided tours that fascinate older children with stories of deadly plants. There is also the Treehouse Restaurant built into the canopy of mature lime trees, which makes for a memorable family meal.
Garden admission is required, but the Cascade and general garden areas provide a good play experience for younger visitors.
Best for: The Grand Cascade soaks children on warm days, and the Poison Garden tours fascinate older ones. Bring spare clothes.
Swansfield Park
Swansfield Park on Swansfield Park Road (NE66 1QW) is Alnwick's main free neighbourhood playground. It has a play structure, swings, slides, and toddler swings -- a solid range of equipment for everyday use. Maintained by Northumberland County Council, it is the go-to option for families who want a free, no-fuss playground close to the town centre.
Best for: Alnwick's main free playground with a good range of equipment. No booking or admission charge needed.
Allerburn Lea and Alnwick North
Alnwick Town Council maintains play areas at Allerburn Lea and Alnwick North, both serving residential estates on the edges of town. These are smaller and more basic than Swansfield Park but are practical for families living nearby. The Town Council inspects all its play areas weekly.
