Churches in Alnwick
From the Grade I listed St Michael's to the Salvation Army — churches and places of worship in Alnwick.
Alnwick has a long history of Christian worship stretching back to at least the 12th century, and quite possibly much earlier. The town today is home to several active churches spanning a range of denominations, from the ancient parish church of St Michael's to smaller congregations meeting in halls and converted buildings. Here is a guide to the main places of worship in Alnwick.
St Michael's Church (Church of England)
St Michael's Church is the parish church of Alnwick and by far its oldest and most architecturally significant place of worship. A church has stood on this site since at least 1147, when a charter recorded a Chapel of Alnwick, though there are unconfirmed reports of an earlier Saxon chapel from the 8th century.
The current building dates largely from the 15th century. After serious damage during Scottish raids in the early 14th century, the church was substantially rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style. King Henry VI helped fund the reconstruction by granting the burgesses of Alnwick a port at Alnmouth and rights to a fair and market, so that they might "make and repair their church."
The result is one of the finest examples of Perpendicular architecture in the north of England. The spacious chancel features elaborately sculptured octagonal pillars, and at the south-east corner stands a hexagonal turret with a spiral staircase leading to a four-storey roof chamber. The chamber's purpose is uncertain, but it may have served a military function during the border wars, possibly as part of a beacon relay chain connecting nearby Heiferlaw with Alnwick Castle.
St Michael's is a Grade I listed building and holds regular Sunday services as well as a midweek service on Wednesdays at 10.15am.
Best for: St Michael's is well worth visiting even if you are not attending a service. The 15th-century chancel and the mysterious hexagonal turret make it one of the most interesting churches in Northumberland.
St Paul's Catholic Church
St Paul's Catholic Church is located on Percy Street, NE66 1AE. The building was originally completed in 1846 as an Anglican church, built to increase capacity for the Church of England in the growing town. It was later acquired by the Catholic Church in the 1980s when their existing premises became too small for the congregation.
St Paul's is part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and holds regular Masses. Check the diocesan website for current service times.
Alnwick Baptist Church
Alnwick Baptist Church is on Lisburn Street and is a Grade II listed building. Morning worship is held at 10.30am on Sundays. The church runs various community activities and groups throughout the week alongside its regular services.
St James's United Reformed Church
St James's United Reformed Church is located on Pottergate, NE66 1JW. It is part of the URC Northern Synod and holds regular Sunday services. The building sits in the heart of the town, close to the Market Place.
The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has a hall on Hotspur Street, NE66 1QE. Activities at the Alnwick centre have been paused at various points, so it is worth checking their website or contacting them directly for up-to-date information about services and community programmes.
Christians Together in Alnwick
Several of the town's churches collaborate through Christians Together in Alnwick, an ecumenical group that organises joint events, community projects, and shared services at various points throughout the year. If you are new to the town and unsure which church might suit you, their website is a useful starting point.
Best for: Alnwick's churches are more than places of worship. Between them they run food banks, community cafes, youth groups, and social events. Even if you are not a churchgoer, you may find their community activities useful.
Visiting Alnwick's Churches
St Michael's is the standout for visitors with an interest in history or architecture. It is open during the day and there is no charge to look around. The Visit Alnwick website maintains an up-to-date list of service times for all the town's churches.
