Dog-Friendly Alnwick

No dogs in Hulne Park or the Garden — but riverside walks, dog-friendly pubs, and stunning nearby beaches. Your guide to Alnwick with a dog.

Alnwick.live·

Alnwick is a welcoming town for dog owners, with a good range of pubs and cafes that actively welcome four-legged visitors, plus some of Northumberland's finest beaches within a short drive. There are a couple of notable exceptions to be aware of -- but plenty of alternatives. Here is the complete guide.

Where Dogs Are Not Allowed

It is worth covering this first, because two of Alnwick's biggest attractions have strict no-dog policies.

Hulne Park -- despite being 3,000 acres of beautiful parkland -- does not permit dogs at all. The park is managed by Northumberland Estates and the rule is firm: no dogs, no bicycles, no vehicles. The restriction protects grazing livestock and wildlife within the walled estate. If you are visiting with a dog, you will need to leave them elsewhere or choose a different walk.

The Alnwick Garden also does not allow dogs, with the exception of registered assistance dogs. This applies to the entire garden site, including Lilidorei and the outdoor areas.

Best for: If you are planning a day at The Alnwick Garden or Hulne Park, your dog will need to stay at home or with a sitter. Neither venue makes exceptions for dogs on leads.

Dog-Friendly Walks

Fortunately, there are plenty of excellent walks around Alnwick where dogs are welcome.

The River Aln Town Walk

The riverside path from the castle grounds past Lion Bridge is dog-friendly and makes a pleasant 2-mile loop. The path is mostly flat, follows the river, and connects back to the town centre. Dogs can paddle in the shallows of the Aln -- most of them do.

Alnwick to Alnmouth

The 4.5-mile walk from Alnwick to Alnmouth follows the River Aln through farmland and finishes on the beach. Dogs are welcome, though they should be kept on leads through fields with livestock. Once you reach the sand, most dogs can run freely. Catch the X18 bus back.

Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle

The coastal walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the best dog walks in Northumberland. The 2.5-mile return route follows the clifftop path with spectacular views. Dogs must be on leads near livestock in the fields, but are welcome throughout the walk. Note that dogs cannot enter the castle itself, but the approach and the views are the main attraction.

Alnwick Pastures

A quieter circular walk through the farmland south of town. Dogs are welcome but should be on leads around livestock. See our walks guide for the full route.

Dog-Friendly Pubs

Alnwick has several pubs that genuinely welcome dogs rather than merely tolerating them.

The Dirty Bottles

The Dirty Bottles on Narrowgate is an 18th-century pub with a famous sealed window full of old bottles that, legend has it, must never be moved. Dogs are welcome inside, and the gastro-pub food is some of the best in town.

The John Bull Inn

The John Bull Inn on Howick Street is a traditional town-centre pub that welcomes dogs. Water bowls are provided, and there is outdoor seating in the warmer months.

The Plough Inn

At Boulmer, a short drive from Alnwick, The Plough welcomes dogs and serves home-cooked food. The nearby beach at Boulmer is quiet, scenic, and dog-friendly year-round.

The Joiners Arms

The Joiners Arms in nearby Newton-by-the-Sea welcomes well-behaved dogs and serves award-winning food. After lunch, Newton Point beach is a short walk away.

Dog-Friendly Cafes

Several cafes in the town centre welcome dogs inside, including The Flower Cafe on Bondgate Without, Grannies Tea Room on Narrowgate, and Rocking Horse Cafe and Gallery. For the full list, see our best cafes guide.

Nearby Dog-Friendly Beaches

The Northumberland coast is one of the most dog-friendly stretches of coastline in England. Most beaches have no restrictions on dogs year-round.

Alnmouth Beach

The closest beach to Alnwick, around a 15-minute drive. Miles of golden sand backed by dunes, with views out to Coquet Island. Dogs can run freely here year-round. The village has dog-friendly pubs for afterwards.

Embleton Bay

A stunning sweep of sand with Dunstanburgh Castle visible at the southern end. Dogs are welcome on the beach at all times. The walk down from the car park at Dunstan Steads is short and easy. This is regularly rated among the best beaches in the country.

Warkworth Beach

Seven miles south of Alnwick, Warkworth has a long stretch of sand reached by walking through the dunes. Quieter than Alnmouth, dog-friendly, and with Warkworth Castle visible on the hill behind the village.

Best for: Most Northumberland beaches allow dogs all year. However, always check for seasonal nesting bird restrictions, particularly around the Farnes and Long Nanny -- tern colonies are fenced off from May to August and dogs must be kept well away.
