From the White Swan's Olympic Suite to boutique B&Bs in converted townhouses — where to stay in Alnwick.

Alnwick.live·

Alnwick attracts visitors from across the country and beyond, drawn by the castle, the garden, the coastline, and the town's distinctive character. Whether you are planning a weekend break, a longer holiday, or visiting for a specific event, finding the right place to stay matters. The good news is that Alnwick has a strong range of accommodation, from grand hotels with centuries of history to boutique guesthouses and comfortable B&Bs.

Here is our guide to the best options.

The White Swan Hotel

The White Swan Hotel on Bondgate Within is a 300-year-old coaching inn right in the centre of town, just steps from Alnwick Castle and the Alnwick Garden. It is one of the most recognisable hotels in Northumberland, and with good reason. The rooms range from cosy classics to spacious suites, all well maintained and comfortable. Hardy's Bar and Lounge serves food and drinks throughout the day.

The hotel's most famous feature is the Olympic Suite, which contains original panelling, mirrors, and ornate ceiling mouldings salvaged from RMS Olympic, the sister ship to the Titanic. It is a genuinely remarkable thing to see, and worth a visit even if you are not staying. Free parking is available at the rear of the hotel.

Best for: Historic coaching inn with Titanic connections, central location, free parking.

The Cookie Jar

The Cookie Jar on Bailiffgate is a luxury boutique hotel in a converted former convent, with just 11 individually designed bedrooms. The building is Grade II listed and sits adjacent to Alnwick Castle on one of the town's most attractive streets. Each room features luxury linens, Penhaligon's toiletries, and the hotel's signature welcome jar of freshly baked cookies.

Voted "Best Place to Stay in the North" by the Sunday Times, the Cookie Jar is the kind of place that turns a visit to Alnwick into a proper treat. One of the suites occupies the building's original chapel. The hotel also has a bistro and a lovely walled garden.

Best for: Boutique luxury in a converted convent, award-winning, just 11 rooms.

Bailiffgate Hotel

Bailiffgate Hotel occupies the historic former Duchess High School building overlooking the Barbican entrance to Alnwick Castle. It is one of the larger hotels in town, with 48 bedrooms designed to blend the building's Georgian origins with modern comfort. Facilities include a restaurant, bar, sun terrace, garden, and free on-site parking.

The dining is led by Head Chef Paul Blakey, who focuses on seasonal Northumberland produce. It is a strong choice if you want a full-service hotel experience with a sense of occasion.

Best for: 48 rooms in a historic building, restaurant, bar, and castle views.

The Bondgate Boutique

The Bondgate Boutique at 22 Bondgate Without is a small, stylish guesthouse in a Grade II listed building dating from 1705. There are seven beautifully appointed en-suite bedrooms with king-size and super king-size beds, Egyptian cotton linen, and a clean, modern aesthetic.

The Bondgate Boutique operates on a room-only basis with self-check-in, which suits visitors who prefer flexibility and independence. The location is excellent, next to the Alnwick Garden and the Treehouse Restaurant, with free parking available through the archway at the rear.

Best for: Stylish room-only guesthouse, seven rooms, self-check-in, great location.

Holly Lodge

Holly Lodge is a luxury B&B within a very short walk of Alnwick Castle, the Alnwick Garden, and the town centre. It offers a more traditional bed and breakfast experience, with comfortable rooms, a generous breakfast, and a welcoming atmosphere. The lodge has a large, secure car park protected by CCTV, which is a genuine bonus in a busy tourist town.

If you are booking for three nights or more, Holly Lodge offers a discount when you book directly through their website.

Best for: Luxury B&B, walking distance to the castle and gardens, secure parking.

Alnwick Lodge

Alnwick Lodge is set in a 17th-century converted stone farmhouse at West Cawledge Park, about three miles from the town centre on the A1. It has 15 individually designed en-suite guest bedrooms, along with camping and glamping options on the same site. Breakfast is included and well regarded, with a full English alongside lighter options.

Alnwick Lodge is a good choice if you are driving and want somewhere with easy access to the A1, or if you fancy combining your stay with a bit of outdoor living.

Best for: Converted farmhouse, 15 rooms, camping and glamping, easy A1 access.

Planning your stay

Alnwick gets busy during the summer months and around school holidays, so booking ahead is advisable, particularly for the smaller boutique options. Most of the town-centre hotels and B&Bs are within walking distance of the main attractions, making a car unnecessary once you have arrived. For the latest availability and prices, check each venue's website directly.
