EV Charging Points in Alnwick

Ultra-rapid IONITY chargers, an Osprey hub at Willowburn, and council car park units -- where to charge an electric car in and around Alnwick.

Alnwick.live·

For a market town of its size, Alnwick has surprisingly good EV charging -- including an ultra-rapid IONITY station, an Osprey rapid hub, and council-operated chargers in the town centre. Here is the practical guide.

Ultra-Rapid Charging

IONITY at Cawledge Business Park, Hawfinch Drive, NE66 2GD -- 4 x 350 kW CCS ultra-rapid chargers (with infrastructure for 2 more). This is one of the fastest public charging stations in Northumberland. IONITY chargers can deliver around 100 km (62 miles) of range in just eight minutes, depending on your car's maximum charge rate.

Best for:

IONITY's pay-as-you-go rate is 79p/kWh, but the Ionity Passport subscription (currently £11.25/month) drops the price to around 25p/kWh -- a significant saving if you use IONITY regularly. The station is opposite the Hog's Head Inn on the edge of town.

Rapid Charging

Osprey at Willowburn Retail Park, Willowburn Avenue, NE66 2DH -- 2 x 50 kW rapid chargers with CCS and CHAdeMO connectors. One of the first Osprey sites in the North East, supplied with 100% renewable energy. A 50 kW charger delivers around 80 miles of range in 30 minutes. Located on the retail park with shops nearby.

Town Centre Chargers

Fuuse network at Greenwell Road Car Park, Denwick Lane, NE66 1HB -- 1 fast device (7 kW, 1 connector) plus 2 rapid devices (2 connectors). Operated by Northumberland County Council. This is the most central charger in Alnwick, within a short walk of Bondgate Within and the market place.

As of April 2026, Northumberland County Council's tariff is 68p/kWh for 11 kW and 22 kW chargers and 78p/kWh for 50 kW chargers. No membership or joining fee.

Costs at a Glance

| Location | Speed | Approximate Cost | |----------|-------|-----------------| | IONITY (Passport subscriber) | 350 kW | ~25p/kWh | | IONITY (PAYG) | 350 kW | 79p/kWh | | Osprey (Willowburn) | 50 kW | ~70-79p/kWh | | NCC Greenwell Rd (fast) | 7 kW | 68p/kWh | | NCC Greenwell Rd (rapid) | 50 kW | 78p/kWh |

Charging for Visitors

Alnwick is a major tourist destination (the Castle and Garden alone draw hundreds of thousands of visitors), and the IONITY station makes it one of the best-served towns in Northumberland for EV drivers passing through on the A1.

If you are visiting the Castle or Garden for the day, the Greenwell Road car park charger lets you top up while you explore. For a quicker stop on a longer journey, the IONITY station off Hawfinch Drive can add serious range in under 15 minutes.

Home Charging

If you have a driveway, a home wallbox is the cheapest way to charge -- typically 7-10p/kWh on an overnight tariff. Installation costs around £800-£1,200 before any grant.

The OZEV grant (up to £500, covering 75% of installation cost) is available for renters, flat owners, and landlords -- but ended for owner-occupiers with driveways in 2022.

The Residential Picture

Most of Alnwick's newer housing estates (Willowburn Park, Broomfield Meadows) have driveways, making home charger installation straightforward. The older town centre properties on Bondgate and Narrowgate are more challenging, though the Greenwell Road car park charger is within easy walking distance.

Northumberland County Council's EV strategy is focused on ensuring every market town has at least one rapid charger, and Alnwick is well ahead of that target with three separate charging sites already operational.
