There was some very fine shooting on the estate at Hulne Priory near Alnwick this summer, and it was all in a good cause. A pair of clay-pigeon shoots held on the grounds raised close to £69,000 for NE Youth, the North East charity that supports young people across the region.

As reported by the Northumberland Gazette, the total came from two separate events held on the Northumberland Estates land just outside the town.

Two shoots, one total

The Corporate Clay Pigeon Shoot drew 34 teams from local businesses and other organisations and raised more than £54,000 on its own. Alongside it, 25 teams of experienced shooters took part in the John Shallcross Memorial Clay Pigeon Shoot, named in honour of a long-standing figure in the charity, raising a further £15,000.

Together the two events brought hundreds of people out to the estate and turned a weekend of friendly competition into a substantial sum for the charity's work.

Best for:

NE Youth's annual clay shoot is a long-running fixture, with the corporate event added in more recent years to reconnect the charity with businesses across the North East.

According to Jon Niblo, chief executive of NE Youth, the annual shoot is "a tradition which has been going for over 40 years."

Why it matters locally

NE Youth runs youth sessions, mentoring and other programmes aimed at giving young people across the North East a better start, and events like this one are a big part of how that work gets funded.

That the shoots take place at Hulne Priory, on the doorstep of Alnwick, gives the town a direct connection to the charity's success. It is a reminder of how the estates and open country around Alnwick continue to host events that ripple out to benefit young people well beyond the town itself.
