New Alnwick Judo Club Gets £1,000 Town Council Grant

Alnwick has a judo club again, and it has just been given a helping hand by the town council. Judo Spirit Academy has been awarded a £1,000 grant from Alnwick Town Council, which describes it as the first affiliated judo club in the town for many years.

What the money will pay for

Most of the grant will cover the cost of hiring the club's venue over the next few months. The rest is going on equipment and spare judo suits, so that new members can try the sport without buying a full kit straight away.

The club trains at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre on Willowburn Avenue. It started up in April, so the grant comes as it marks its first six months, according to the Northumberland Gazette.

Who can join

Classes are for children aged five and over, and there are parent and child sessions so families can take part together. The Gazette reports that founder Joe Savage hopes to add a session for adults too.

Best for:

Founder Joe Savage said judo is "a great sport to become involved with" and thanked the town council for its support.

Town councillors Stacey Harding, Jenny Garside and Sam Frost visited the club when the grant was announced.

How to get involved

If you would like to try a class, or bring your children along, the club can be contacted by email at judospiritacademyuk@gmail.com. It is worth getting in touch before you turn up, to check session times and which class suits your age group.

The grant was announced by Alnwick Town Council, and there is more on the club's first six months in the Northumberland Gazette.
