Skate Parks Near Alnwick

Alnwick does not currently have a purpose-built skatepark. A campaign to build one ran for several years, and a company called Alnwick Skate Park and Wheelsports Facility Limited was set up in 2015, but the organisation has since been dissolved and a full skatepark never materialised. There is, however, a pump track in town, and several good skateparks within a reasonable drive. Here is what is available.

Alnwick Pump Track

The Alnwick Pump Track is the closest thing Alnwick has to a wheelsports facility. Located near the Lindisfarne Centre on Lindisfarne Road, it features a pump track, a jump line, and a push-up track. It is free to use and open to skateboards, BMX bikes, and scooters.

The facility is outdoors and unsupervised, so riders of all ages use it at their own risk. Helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards are strongly recommended.

Best for: The pump track is a good option for younger riders and beginners, but if you are looking for ramps, rails, and street obstacles, you will need to travel to one of the skateparks below.

Amble Skatepark (8 miles)

Amble Skatepark is the nearest full skatepark to Alnwick, located at the Welfare Park playing fields on Acklington Road, NE65 0NG. It is roughly eight miles south-east of Alnwick and takes around 15 minutes by car.

The park is made up of a concrete mini-ramp and a street section with a variety of obstacles. It is free to use, outdoors, and welcomes skateboards, rollerblades, BMX bikes, and scooters. The park took five years of campaigning and fundraising before opening, with a total cost of around 180,000 pounds. Local skaters worked with the Coquet Youth Team and the Amble Development Trust to bring the project to fruition.

Amble itself is a pleasant coastal town with cafes and a harbour, so it is easy to make a half-day of it.

Morpeth Skatepark (30 miles)

Morpeth Skatepark is an all-concrete park located near the tennis courts in Carlisle Park. It is roughly 30 miles south of Alnwick, so it is more of a day-trip option than a quick ride out.

The park follows a compact back-and-forth layout. Starting on one side with a flat bank next to a quarter pipe, it opens up onto a fun box in the middle with a hubba and hipped banks, followed by a bowled corner with an adjoining flat bank and a stair set with a rail leading off the top platform. It opened in July 2005 after six years of fundraising and cost around 130,000 pounds.

Carlisle Park is a good setting -- there are playgrounds, riverside walks, and the town centre is a short walk away.

Ashington Skatepark (25 miles)

Ashington Skatepark is around 25 miles south of Alnwick. It was designed and built by Wheelscape and opened in 2012. It is a concrete facility with a mix of street and transition features.

Blyth Isabella Skate Park (35 miles)

The Isabella Skate Park in Blyth is one of the newer skateparks in Northumberland. It was built by Wheelscape Skateparks with funding from Blyth Town Council and Northumberland County Council. At roughly 35 miles from Alnwick, it is the furthest option on this list, but worth knowing about if you are heading south.

Best for: The nearest indoor option is Unit 23 Skatepark in Dumfries, which is a significant drive from Alnwick but worth the trip for a rainy-day session or a dedicated skating outing.

The Case for an Alnwick Skatepark

The dissolved company and the active Facebook community suggest there is genuine demand for a proper skatepark in Alnwick. Towns of a similar size across Northumberland have managed to build concrete parks through a combination of local fundraising, council grants, and community campaigning.
