Summer Holiday Activities in Alnwick: The Complete Guide for Families

Castle adventures, Lilidorei, beach days, swimming, and the library reading challenge -- everything you need to fill six weeks of summer in Alnwick.

Alnwick.live·

Summer holidays in Alnwick come with a serious advantage: you have a castle with broomstick flying, the world's largest children's play structure, and the Northumberland coast all within easy reach. Here is your complete guide to keeping children entertained from mid-July to early September.

Alnwick Castle and Garden

Alnwick Castle runs a packed programme of family activities through the summer. Children can try broomstick flying (yes, the same courtyard where Harry Potter was filmed), have a go at archery, and follow themed trails through the castle grounds. The events calendar changes each year, so check the website for the latest programme.

The Alnwick Garden is a spectacular day out in its own right. The Grand Cascade, the Poison Garden, and the Bamboo Labyrinth are all worth exploring. Summer events include The School of Poison, scavenger hunts, and craft activities.

Lilidorei at The Alnwick Garden is the world's largest children's play structure, designed for ages 4 to 12. It features towers, bridges, slides, swings, and ladders spread across a fantasy village of clan houses. Daily activities include elf craft workshops, sword-fighting lessons, and bow-and-arrow practice. Separate booking is required.

Best for: Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden are separate attractions with separate tickets. Annual membership is worth considering if you plan to visit more than once over the summer.

Free Outdoor Activities

Alnwick has plenty of green space for free days out. The Pastures, a large open space beside the River Aln, is ideal for picnics, ball games, and paddling in the shallow river on warm days. The riverside walk from the town centre follows the Aln through woodland and fields.

For longer walks, our walks guide has routes including the path to Hulne Park (a vast, beautiful estate open to walkers) and routes along the coast.

The Bailiffgate Museum in the old church on Bailiffgate has interactive exhibits about Alnwick's 10,000 years of history, with dressing up and arts and crafts for children. Admission is modest and it makes a good rainy day option too.

Best for: See our full guides to playgrounds, walks, and free things to do in Alnwick.

Swimming

Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre on Willowburn Avenue has a 25-metre pool with a moveable floor and a 10-metre teaching pool. Family swim sessions run throughout the holidays, and holiday intensive courses help children progress between lesson stages. The centre also runs holiday camps with team games, bouldering wall sessions, swimming, and arts and crafts for ages 5 to 12.

See our full swimming guide for all the options.

The Summer Reading Challenge

Northumberland libraries run the national Summer Reading Challenge every year, and 2026's theme is Read to the Beat, exploring the connection between stories and music. Children aged 4 to 11 sign up at their local library, read six books over the summer, and collect rewards along the way. It is completely free.

Alnwick Library on Green Batt runs free holiday activities alongside the reading challenge, including craft sessions and story time.

Day Trips Within Easy Reach

Alnwick is perfectly placed for day trips to the Northumberland coast and countryside.

The nearest beaches are stunning. Embleton Bay has golden sand, rock pools at low tide, and views of Dunstanburgh Castle ruins. Alnmouth has a beautiful estuary beach and a village worth exploring.

Northumberland Zoo near Felton (about 15 minutes south) has over 80 species including snow leopards and meerkats, daily feeding talks, an adventure playground, and soft play.

Cragside, the National Trust estate near Rothbury, has woodland adventure play, lakes, and the house itself, which was the first in the world to be lit by hydroelectric power.

Bamburgh Castle is about 20 minutes north, with a beach that regularly features in lists of the best in the country.
