Alnwick Lifting Firm William Hackett to Open Its Works for Heritage Open Days

One of Alnwick's less visible success stories is opening its doors. William Hackett, the lifting and hoisting equipment maker based at Lionheart Enterprise Park, is inviting the public in to see how it works as part of this year's Heritage Open Days, the first time the firm has taken part.

It is a fitting choice. Founded back in 1892, William Hackett is a long-established engineering name whose chain hoists, lifting chains and hoisting gear are relied on across industries at home and internationally, from construction and offshore energy to shipping. The lifting side of the business has been rooted in Alnwick since 1989, and today the town is home to a company that quietly supplies customers around the world while employing local people on its own doorstep.

A global firm with local roots

That "global reach, local base" story sits neatly with the national theme for Heritage Open Days 2026, 'Everyday Histories', which celebrates the working lives, workplaces and skills that shape our communities. Rather than a castle or a garden, this is a chance to look inside a modern Alnwick workplace and see the kind of skilled manufacturing and engineering jobs that often go unnoticed in a town far better known for tourism.

For many residents it will be a first glimpse of what actually goes on behind the doors at Lionheart, and a reminder that Alnwick's economy runs on more than visitors. It is also a welcome moment for anyone weighing up careers in engineering or manufacturing close to home.

William Hackett is one of a number of businesses, historic buildings and organisations taking part in Alnwick's Heritage Open Days, which run from 13 to 19 September, building towards the main open day on Saturday 19 September. Events across the programme are free, though some activities need to be booked in advance, so it is worth checking the details and reserving a place before you set off.
