Best Fish and Chips in Alnwick
From a Five Star Quality Award winner on Market Street to a takeaway with delivery — the best fish and chips in Alnwick.
Alnwick is a proper Northumbrian market town, and proper Northumbrian market towns have proper fish and chip shops. Whether you are refuelling after a morning at Alnwick Castle or picking up a Friday night takeaway, here are the best places to get fish and chips in the town.
Carlo's Fish and Chips
Carlo's is the one most people know, and for good reason. This family-run restaurant and takeaway at 6-9 Market Street, NE66 1SS has been an Alnwick institution for years, winning the National Federation of Fish Friers' Five Star Fish & Chip Quality Award as area winners consistently since 2011.
The line-caught cod and haddock are the staples, cooked in a light, crisp batter. They also make their own artisan gelato on site using a secret family recipe -- an unexpected bonus that has become a draw in its own right.
You can eat in (the sit-down restaurant is upstairs) or take away. The location on Market Street puts you right in the heart of town, so it is easy to combine with a wander around the shops.
Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11:30-14:30 and 16:30-21:00, Friday and Saturday 11:30-21:00, Sunday open seasonally (typically April-September, 17:00-21:00). Open all day during school holidays.
Best for: Carlo's has held the Five Star Fish & Chip Quality Award since 2011. The homemade gelato is worth trying alongside your fish supper.
The West Gate Fish and Chips and Grill
The West Gate is a popular takeaway option in the town centre, offering traditional fish and chips alongside a grill menu. They offer online ordering and delivery, which makes them a convenient choice if you are staying in self-catering accommodation in or around Alnwick and want your supper brought to the door.
The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. It is a straightforward, reliable chippy that does the basics well.
Victoria House Fish and Chips
Victoria House is at 22A Victoria Crescent, NE66 1RQ, a short walk from the town centre. It is a no-frills takeaway that has built a loyal local following. The fish is fresh, the chips are done properly, and the prices are fair.
Victoria House is a good option if the Market Street area is busy -- particularly on summer weekends when the town fills with visitors and queues at Carlo's can build up.
Tips for Visitors
- Lunchtime is busiest at Carlo's, especially on weekends and during school holidays. If you want to eat in, arriving before 12:00 or after 14:00 avoids the worst of the queue.
- Take your chips to the castle. The benches along the Pastures, just below the castle walls, are a fine spot to eat fish and chips with a view. You will not be the first to have the idea, but the view does not get old.
- Parking is free with a disc in most town centre car parks. See our parking guide for details.
