Alnwick Throws Open Its Doors for Heritage Open Days 2026

Alnwick is opening a long list of doors this month. As part of Heritage Open Days 2026, England's largest festival of history and culture, more than 20 free events across the town invite residents and visitors to step inside places they usually only walk past. The programme builds towards the main open day on Saturday 19 September.

This year's national theme is 'Everyday Histories', which shifts the spotlight from grand houses to the working lives of ordinary people, the factory floors, kitchens, shops and workplaces that shaped a town. For Alnwick, far better known for its castle and garden, it is a chance to celebrate the everyday and the industrious.

A 'World of Work' angle

Much of the Alnwick line-up leans into that working theme. The town's independent shops take part through an Alnwick Trades trail, where you can pick up a leaflet and explore the centre to discover the stories behind familiar high-street businesses. In a first for the festival, the lifting-equipment manufacturer William Hackett at Lionheart Enterprise Park is opening its works to the public, a rare look inside a modern Alnwick employer whose gear is used around the world.

Heritage Open Days events are free to attend, but some, including business tours and guided walks, need to be booked in advance, so check the programme before you set off.

What to see around the town

There is plenty for every interest. The Bailiffgate Museum tells 10,000 years of local history in one visit, with interactive displays, children's activities and an art exhibition. The Alnwick Playhouse is offering behind-the-scenes tours, a chance to see how the much-loved theatre runs beyond the curtain.

Beyond the buildings, local groups including Alnwick Civic Society have arranged a series of guided walks exploring the town's built heritage, its lost pubs and its sporting past, alongside visits to churches and other historic buildings.

It all adds up to one of the fullest Heritage Open Days programmes the town has put on, and a good excuse to look at Alnwick with fresh eyes.
