Visiting Lilidorei: A Family Guide to the World's Largest Play Structure

Ask a child in Northumberland where they most want to spend a day and there is a fair chance the answer is Lilidorei. Opened on 5 June 2023 after more than a decade in the planning, this vast timber play village at The Alnwick Garden is billed as the largest play structure in the world. It is unlike anything else in the region, and it rewards a bit of forward planning. Here is how to get the most out of a visit.

What Lilidorei actually is

Lilidorei is not a conventional playground with a few slides and a climbing frame. It is an immersive, story-led village built into a wooded hillside, designed by the Danish play specialists Monstrum and conceived by the Duchess of Northumberland. The setting has its own mythology: a hidden kingdom that is home to nine clans who celebrate Christmas all year round, ruled by Lord Elfwin from the great central tower.

Each clan has its own house tucked into the landscape, complete with soundscapes, lighting and small pieces of interactive storytelling that children discover as they explore. It is the kind of place where the play and the story feed each other, and where children who are usually hard to please will happily disappear for hours.

Elfwin Drin, the giant tower

The centrepiece is Elfwin Drin, a timber tower that stands around 26 metres (85 feet) tall, making it taller than the Angel of the North. Inside and around it are interconnected bridges, gangways, climbing routes and a set of enormous tube slides that carry you back down towards the village.

It is genuinely thrilling, and worth knowing that the higher levels involve real climbing and height. Confident older children will love it; younger ones tend to gravitate to the lower clan houses, which are gentler and closer to the ground.

Best for: The tower is the highlight, but the magic is in the wandering. Give children time to find the clan houses at their own pace rather than rushing straight to the slides.

Best ages

Lilidorei suits a wide age range, roughly from toddlers up to children of around twelve. The lower village works well for the under-fives, while the tower, the longer slides and the more demanding climbs are aimed squarely at primary-age children and older. Teenagers can enjoy it too, particularly the height and the slides, though the storytelling is pitched younger.

Under-threes go free, so even the smallest family members can come along without adding to the cost.

How long to allow

Plan for at least a couple of hours, and a whole afternoon if your children are the type to explore every corner. Because Lilidorei is largely outdoors and set among trees, it works in most weather, but it is an open-air experience rather than an indoor centre, so dress for the day you actually have.

Bring layers, sensible footwear for climbing and, in colder or wetter months, proper waterproofs. In summer, sun cream and water bottles matter just as much. There is little that spoils a visit faster than a child who is too cold, too hot or wearing the wrong shoes for the tower.

Food and facilities

There is food and drink on site, and the wider Alnwick Garden has more options a short walk away, including the famous Treehouse Restaurant built high into the canopy of mature limes, which makes a memorable spot for a family lunch. Booking is sensible for the Treehouse, especially at weekends and in the holidays.

Tickets and opening times

Lilidorei is ticketed separately from the main Alnwick Garden, though a combined ticket covering both is available and is good value if you want to make a full day of it. A distinctive quirk of the pricing is that everyone aged three and over pays the same rate, whether adult or child, with under-threes free. Prices vary by season and there are often half-price and combined-ticket offers, so it is always worth checking the official booking page for the current rates before you travel.

Opening days and hours change through the year, typically daily in the peak seasons and reduced to a Wednesday-to-Sunday pattern in the quieter months, so check ahead. Tickets can sell out on busy days, particularly during school holidays and at weekends, so booking online in advance is strongly recommended.

Best for: Book online before you go. Lilidorei regularly sells out in the holidays, and turning up on spec on a busy day can mean disappointment.

Free Fridays

One of the most generous touches is Free Fridays. During term time, the Duchess of Northumberland has committed to letting every primary school child in Northumberland and the surrounding area visit Lilidorei free of charge, so that no child misses out for reasons of cost. If you are local and can visit during term time, it is well worth looking into.

Getting there and parking

Lilidorei sits within The Alnwick Garden estate on the edge of the town. For sat navs, use postcode NE66 1FJ for the garden's main car park rather than the general Alnwick postcode, which can send you to the wrong side of the site. There is ample parking, and the play village is a short walk from the entrance.

Making a day of it

Lilidorei pairs naturally with the rest of a day out in Alnwick.
